Midterm

There are three parts to your midterm:

Part I:  Objective – Synthesis of American Literary Periods (20 points)

Thoreau's face over Thoreau's cabin

The chart provided in class will help you organize your ideas in preparation for studying this material.  You should know the six periods of literature that we’ve studied this year, the dates, beliefs, authors, works, and quotes from each of those periods.  There is a difference between Realism and Naturalism, Romanticism and Transcendentalism;  this test will expect you to be able to differentiate between the concepts of each.

Part II:  Literary Devices – Identification of Literary Devices (20 points)

Review the terms on the literary devices list provided in class.  Most are fully explained in the back of your textbook.  The rest have been identified in various class notes and discussions, but please ask if you can’t locate them.  All examples will be taken from Jack London's "To Build a Fire"

 Take a Practice Quiz

Part III:  Essay – SAT-style (60 points)

You will be given an SAT-style quote followed by corresponding questions.  However, the examples you use to support your essay must come from both The Scarlet Letter AND Huck Finn.  Reviewing essential questions and information on character development, conflict, themes and author’s purpose will help you prepare for this experience.  You will be given 25 minutes to write this essay.  You are NOT allowed to use any books or notes on your test.

Write about a character who exemplifies the following quote:

“Change is the end result of all true learning.”                          --Leo Buscaglia

* A different quote is on your test.
