Types of Imagery

After reading AP Essays and having a conversation with Ms. Fitch, I determined you may benefit from being able to identify various types of imagery.  Here is the list from Ms. Fitch's text (I think it's Sound and Sense.).

Imagery - "the representation through language of sense experience".

  1. visual imagery - something which can be "seen in the mind's eye".

  2. auditory imagery - a sound

  3. olfactory imagery - a smell

  4. gustatory imagery - a taste

  5. tactile imagery - a touch ("such as hardness, softness, wetness, or heat and cold")

  6. organic imagery - "an internal sensation, such as hunger, thirst, fatigue, or nausea"

  7. kinesthetic imagery - "movement or tension in the muscles or joints"
