Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How many colleges do most students apply to?

bullet
"Apparently it is good to apply to only about 5 colleges: 2 stretches, 2 comfort schools (good chance of getting in), and 1 fall-back. But as far as I'm concerned I am very glad that I applied to ten. Some of my friends applied only to the standard five, and actually found themselves somewhat limited in their options once letters came out. I on the other hand had options out the wazoo!! I didn't feel like I was settling for a college, because my options were so wide and varied, I had 8 schools to choose from ranging from CWRU to Tufts University to Notre Dame!"
2.  How long does it take to fill out an application?

bullet"The essay takes the longest, actually filling out the rest of the application probably won't take more than an hour (including the parents portion) if you're prepared."
3.  What topics do students write their college essays on?

bullet"Most of the essays were on very singular topics, that other students would find hard to duplicate. For example, mine was on our 2-year stay in India, and I don't think many people could write about the same thing. Other topics included personal experiences and insights."
4.  How do schools view the Common Application?

bullet"I sent the common application to 6 of the 10 schools I applied to. In fact a couple of those schools only wanted the common application, they didn't have another one. Most of the schools (minus perhaps some of the more elite Ivies...not sure though) actually prefer it because it makes it easier to compile data and compare applications that are sent in."
5.  How many times do most students take the SAT and ACT?

bullet"I took the SATs 3 times and the ACTs once. And actually I didn't send in my SAT scores, only my ACTs."
6.  Do most students take a prep course for these tests?

bullet "Yes."
7.  Do prep courses really help your score on the SAT and ACT?

bullet"I think they help a little."
8. Did you take an SAT or ACT course?

bullet"I took the Princeton Review to help for the SAT. I honestly think I could have achieved the score that I received at the end of the class by myself. It would however be helpful for the kids to take a less expensive course like the one at Orange Library, just to learn time-saving techniques and things like that."
9.   Where do you find out about scholarships?

bullet"The guidance office is really good about keeping the scholarships up-to-date, and if it doesn't, Mrs. Clark always knows the latest applications and their dates."
